As windows loads, press the F8 key constantly until you reach an advanced options menu.
From there you might try booting windows with safe mode to try and see what is wrong or try booting computer under last functioning settings or even attempt running the windows recovery program.
If you do not have a Recovery CD then you cannot restore it back. However, some Laptop has a in-built Recovery Hotkey ( usually F10 ) upon startup.
Another way is to get hold of a Original Window XP CD and load it as if you are setting up a new pc. Your only problem is to search for the relevant Drivers that this laptop need to function properly e.g. Graphic, LAN, Audio drivers etc
