either you need to install a disk that came with it or you need to make your computer install the driver software automatically.
to do this you need to pay attention to the bottom-right corner of the screen. when you plug it in a text box should appear and say it is trying to install driver software. sometimes it helps to 1. plug it in. 2.wait for the install to complete or fail. 3(if install fails). try again(repeat whole process)

Your drive *might* require software (most usually don’t), more likely, however, is that the drive has a file system that Windows doesn’t support, or has a corrupt FS/MFT/Partition Table.

How big is the hdd? it may need another power source, if its just a usb stick, try it in a different port. sometimes the connector for the external drive comes with 2 usb cable attached together, if this is the case plug both in.

otherwise you must go to start – right click my computer – select disk management – and see if it shows up on the right, right click it and format it. if its not a new drive and you have data on it then dont do this. hard drives are plug and play so no need to install.

all else fails, try it in a different computer and see if you have the same problem. also USB ports on the front of desktops and on the side of laptops tend to have less power then the ones on the back of the desktop and also back of the laptop. try them all…
